Welcome to ZoologistHeyze.
My name is Heyze and I have a degree in zoology and have a
passion for wildlife and the environment which has lead me to create this blog
to share my own personal opinion and to discuss current conservation and ecological
issues. It is also a place for the share my knowledge on wildlife and the ways
in which we can help to conserve our planet.
With this, one phrase keeps going through my head:
“Be a force for change” - I heard this phrase today and it
is sort of similar to how I have been feeling lately and here’s why.
I recently started a bullet journal and one of the modules I
have seen online that I adopted is the daily act of kindness where I try to do,
at least, one random act of kindness a day. This can be as small as smiling at
a person or as big as buying a person a house. The intension of this was to
pass on happiness and hope that that kindness led to more kindness which would
eventually lead to a happier world. Unfortunately, the reality of the situation
is that the entire world will not change just because I smiled at a person, no
matter how much I would like it to.
This is the first hurdle that trips many people up and makes
them feel like it is hopeless so why bother. Even though I know it will not
change the world I have still tried to keep it up because that one person I
smiled at may have felt lonely and now feels connected and to them I have
changed their world. I know this is all hypothetical and it could just as
easily be taken in by the person as me being a smiley loon! But at the end of
the day I can say I tried and be happy that I may have changed someone’s world
and that’s pretty cool.
This leads me back to hearing that phrase – “Be a force for
change” – and how it is what I am already trying to do and how it can be so
much more. The random act of kindness is all well and good, and I plan to
continue it even now, but it is only about people and their emotional state and
this is not enough. We live in a world populated with billions of other organisms
and we are slowly destroying it for us and for them. I mean just look in any
news outlet and you can see the horrors that humans are causing and I do not
want to be part of that. So I have modified my random acts of kindness to
include other organisms and just to the planet in general; there are hundreds
of ways to do this from looking where you’re walking so that you don’t stand on
a snail to recycling a bottle or picking up a single piece of litter. This is
another case where I know me picking up a piece of litter won’t change the
entire world but it could change an organisms. It can also be more than this
though and that is what I want this blog to be about because I don’t think this
will become the most popular blog but even if I can get you to read it and you pick
up one piece of litter then I have changed something I will “Be a force for
change”. Then after you have picked up that litter you may get another person
to do the same and that force for change grows and becomes bigger.
“Rome wasn’t built in a day” this is a saying I have heard a
lot during my life and can be modified to “Rome wasn’t built by one person”.
One person can’t change it all but they can change something and all those
somethings can change it all.
Be the force for change even if it all seems hopeless.
Heyze.
